Iron object containing explosives found off the coast of Arnavutköy, Istanbul

An iron object containing explosives was found by a fisherman off the coast of Arnavutköy, Istanbul. The explosives were removed from the iron object by gendarmerie teams after it was brought to the shore and taken away for examination.

The incident occurred around noon off the coast of Karaburun neighborhood in Arnavutköy, Istanbul. According to reports, a fisherman who set out to sea with his boat found an iron object on the water's surface.

The fisherman, who tied the object to his boat and brought it to the shore, began pulling it onto land. As it was being pulled, the iron object flipped over, revealing explosives tied together on top of it. Upon notification by citizens, gendarmerie teams were dispatched to the scene. The teams moved citizens in the vicinity away and took security measures. As a result of the work by the gendarmerie teams, the explosives were removed from the iron object and taken away for examination.

Speaking about the incident, a citizen named Metin Çelik said, “It was around 3:00 PM. While we were sitting on the beach, we saw a friend coming to the shore. There was something tied to the back of his boat. He was pulling it, but he was struggling.

We wondered if it was iron or a wooden beam. He pulled it all the way here. We tied it to a 4x4 vehicle to pull it onto land. At that moment, the explosives were not visible.

When we pulled it, the object flipped over and the explosives were revealed. We called the gendarmerie. The teams arrived. They even evacuated the nearby restaurant. The operation lasted 4-5 hours. It was a large package. It turned out there were explosives inside,” he said.
