The 66th Achievement Awards organized by the Journalists Association of Turkey (TGC) have found their recipients. Our colleague, 12punto reporter Sinem Nazlı Demir, was deemed worthy of the 'Internet News Award' for her report titled 'Dozens of people abused a child, all were released! The child and family's search for justice', which was published on December 9, 2024.
Demir was presented with her award by TGC Board Member Göksel Göksu.
In her speech, which she began by thanking Mustafa Büyüksipahi and Barış Terkoğlu, Demir stated the following:
'I would like to briefly mention my report... If you noticed in the report, it says 'abuse by more than 40 men' because the 15-year-old child does not know how many men committed qualified abuse against her. With the news we received three days ago, the defendants were released in the case that went to the higher court. We will report on this case as well, and we will continue to report on it.
I would like to thank all the families who have told me their stories for four years, sharing the abuse they were subjected to and the stories of their murdered daughters.
Yes, there is some lack of awareness in the public, but I do not want to pass without mentioning the language of the press. When women are murdered, the language of the press, which carries details such as how many floors the plaza has, whether alcohol was found in the woman's blood, or the result of a pregnancy test to the headlines, must now change. We will continue to pursue our struggle in this area as well. Thank you again.'
Speaking at the opening of the award ceremony at the TGC Burhan Felek Conference Hall, TGC President Vahap Munyar drew attention to the pressures on journalists.
Following the presentation of the awards to the journalists, a group photo was taken.
