Netflix gained 19 million new subscribers in the final quarter of 2024, driven by its popular original production, the new season of Squid Game, and live events such as the boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul.
Surpassing Wall Street forecasts and bringing its total subscriber count to 301 million in 2024, Netflix achieved a record growth of 15% compared to the previous year. Investing heavily in live broadcasts, the platform also took on the broadcast of two NFL games in addition to the match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul.
While the boxing match was watched by 65 million people, the NFL games each managed to reach 24 million viewers. The second season of Squid Game broke a major record by reaching 68 million viewers in its first week. With this increase in viewership and subscriber acquisition, Netflix generated 10.2 billion dollars in revenue in the final quarter of the year.
The company made a strong start to 2025, and its user base has grown rapidly following the decision to restrict password sharing in May 2023. Having gained more than 80% in value in 2024, Netflix is increasing its investments in new subscriber acquisition.
Furthermore, Netflix will no longer focus on subscriber numbers announced every three months. The company will evaluate its business performance not only through subscriber growth but also through broader indicators such as revenue, profitability, and average revenue per user. With this strategy, it plans to announce only significant milestones.
