TÜİK announces: Number of newspapers and circulation decline, internet news sites continue their rise

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has released its 2025 Periodical Publication Statistics. The data revealed a decline in the number, circulation, and staff of newspapers publishing official announcements, while both the number and employment figures for internet news sites increased.

According to 2025 data from TÜİK, the number of newspapers publishing official announcements fell to 659.

Accordingly, the number of newspapers publishing official announcements dropped by 12.5 percent from 753 in 2024 to 659 in 2025. Of these newspapers, 95.9 percent were local, 3.3 percent were general (national), and 0.8 percent were regional newspapers.

The total annual circulation of newspapers also showed a decline. In 2025, the total circulation of newspapers publishing official announcements decreased by 15.1 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 392 million 797 thousand 801. Of this circulation, 81.9 percent came from general, 17.7 percent from local, and 0.4 percent from regional newspapers.

RISE IN DIGITAL CONTINUES

The number of internet news sites publishing official announcements rose by 2.3 percent from 349 in 2024 to 357 in 2025. The total number of unique visitors to these sites was recorded as 8 billion 840 million 299 thousand 804. The total number of page views was 45 billion 314 million 725 thousand 824.

66.3 percent of visitor traffic and 74.2 percent of page views occurred on internet news sites in the general category. This picture shows that the weight of digital channels in news consumption continues.

There was an increase in the total number of periodicals. The total number of periodicals publishing official announcements and advertisements rose by 6.5 percent from 2 thousand 40 in 2024 to 2 thousand 173 in 2025. 90.9 percent of these publications consisted of political, news, and current affairs content.

A limited decline was recorded on the magazine side. The number of magazines publishing official advertisements fell by 0.8 percent from 474 in 2024 to 470 in 2025. 46.8 percent of the magazines were published monthly, 15.1 percent weekly, and 13.6 percent bi-weekly.

Employment data also revealed the divergence between print and digital media. The number of employees at newspapers publishing official announcements fell by 13.9 percent from 4 thousand 315 to 3 thousand 714. The number of employees at internet news sites increased by 8.4 percent to 3 thousand 690.

Of those working at newspapers, 43.8 percent served as reporters, 26.7 percent as page editors, and 20.3 percent as managing editors. At internet news sites, 39.3 percent of employees were reporters, 37 percent were internet editors, and 10.9 percent were in managing editor positions.

According to TÜİK data, the proportion of women at internet news sites was 46.8 percent among internet editors, 42.6 percent among reporters, and 45.6 percent among writers.
