President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, at the candidate introduction meeting in Hatay, which was devastated by the earthquake, said, "If the central government and local government do not join hands, if they are not in solidarity, that city will not receive anything. Did it come to Hatay? Currently, Hatay has remained abandoned, has remained sorrowful." Erdoğan's words were interpreted as a threat to the people of Hatay.
TKP General Secretary Kemal Okuyan evaluated Erdoğan's words for 12punto. Emphasizing that they already knew Hatay had been left alone, Okuyan said the following:
“There was no need for Erdoğan to make a statement saying 'We left Hatay in the lurch.' We already knew this. The February 6 earthquake confirmed what we knew once again in a painful way. Back then, when we said 'the state is doing nothing here,' they had caused an uproar, calling us 'disloyal.' It is clearly seen who is disloyal, who is heartless, and who is a blackmailer. History has already graded the AKP. For our citizens, this is a great opportunity to pass the test of history. A society, a people that does not vote for those who say 'If you don't vote for me, there is no service,' rises. It gains self-confidence. Otherwise, if it bows to blackmail, services are just a fairy tale, and it cannot escape being taken advantage of.”
