There is less than 6 months left until the local elections. While the AKP aims to reclaim the metropolitan municipalities it lost in 2019, especially Istanbul, the CHP wants to retain the metropolitan municipalities it currently holds.

Alliance debates continue within the opposition front, which emerged defeated from the May 14 and 28 elections. While the İYİ Party has decided to field candidates in all 81 provinces, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu repeatedly states that an alliance is essential.

Sözcü columnist İsmail Saymaz explained in his article today what the 2 conditions are for Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu to win in the local elections.

The relevant part of Saymaz's article is as follows;

“For the CHP to win Istanbul again, two indispensable conditions must be met:

One: İmamoğlu must be the candidate.

Because the CHP cannot win Istanbul without İmamoğlu.

Two: The İYİ Party must provide support.

Canpolat opened fire on both of these targets to become the Istanbul provincial chair.

He fired the first shot at İmamoğlu, who won Istanbul after a quarter of a century, who faces imprisonment and a political ban to prevent him from being a presidential candidate, who was pelted with stones in Erzurum, and who will be nominated again for the IMM in March 2024.

The second shot was aimed at the İYİ Party, which is preparing to field candidates in 81 provinces in the local elections.

Nothing more could have been done to discredit İmamoğlu and dismantle the Istanbul Alliance.”
