The resignation of İYİ Party İBB Group Deputy Chairman İbrahim Özkan had been requested. After Özkan resigned and was subsequently re-elected as Group Deputy Chairman in a vote held by the group, the İYİ Party was thrown into turmoil. Özkan and the 7 İYİ Party members who voted for him were referred to the disciplinary board with a request for permanent expulsion.
Özkan, who is at the center of the controversy, held a press conference regarding the matter at the İBB Saraçhane building. In his statement, Özkan revealed that they had been conducting "back-door diplomacy" with the CHP. He said the following regarding the alliance:
"We were in talks regarding the allocation of 3 district municipalities in winnable areas in Istanbul, 25 metropolitan municipal council memberships, and one deputy mayoral position in each of the CHP-held district municipalities. Buğra Kavuncu told me, 'We will not cooperate even if they give us Beşiktaş.'"
Deputy Chairman for Political Affairs Oktay Vural reacted harshly to Özkan's words. Describing Özkan's remarks as "a setup," Vural wrote the following:
"Back-door bargaining has been conducted with the CHP! By what title and authority?
Where is the decision of the party's legal entity? Who did you bargain with? And he can come out and explain this? The other one is distributing positions without the corporate will of his party! Who is this? Did you receive authorization from your party? As if it were their father's property! These are the results of the personalization of politics… A crony mentality. There is no will of the institutions. How is this different from the 'the state is me' mentality? 'You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours' personal politics… No ethics, no party will.
Does politics not have law, ethics, and principles? While the authorities were entering through the front door asking if we could cooperate, some esteemed individuals were bargaining at the back door! To which ethics, law, or principle does this under-the-counter bargaining and its disclosure conform? And then those who distribute positions are given the role of a Trojan horse! The party's legal personality is being attacked! The will of the voters who voted for it is being distorted! This is a setup. This can have no benefit to the nation or democracy.
As the İYİ Party, our only goal is to be a democratic alternative to serve our nation with our own cadres, based on our corporate values and principles, without becoming something else. Without pressure, without intimidation, without threats, without finger-wagging, without being overbearing, without being forced or condemned, Free and independent!
ANSWER FROM ÖZKAN: YOU ARE THE LAST PERSON
Özkan responded to Vural via social media. Quoting Oktay Vural's tweet, Özkan wrote:
"Mr. Oktay Vural
In back-door diplomacy, there is no authority, there is initiative. I also state this in my speech. Until today, I have conducted these processes with the Chairman. You have only just arrived at the party yesterday. It is unclear for what purpose you came... You could not even write 'İYİ Party' in your profile information before guaranteeing the deputy chairmanship, you were waiting for a position. Later, you wrote the İYİ Party information and started tweeting. You are the last person in this party to speak to me, who has put in effort since the party's foundation."
