In Istanbul yesterday (January 8) at around 19:15, an individual named Ömer S. entered the Fatih Mosque and began shouting slogans, before launching a knife attack on Fatih Mosque Imam Galip Usta and Bilal Erdem, who had come to warn him.
ATTACKER CAPTURED
While Imam Galip Usta and Bilal Erdem, who were seriously injured in the attack, were taken to the hospital, the attacker was also captured and taken into custody.
REMARKABLE ASSESSMENT FROM ALTAYLI
Journalist Fatih Altaylı, who covered the knife attack at Fatih Mosque in his column, commented, “Events expected to occur in destabilizing and destabilized countries have now begun in Turkey.”
Stating, “Although this may look like the work of a madman, it is actually an indicator that we have entered a dangerous period,” Altaylı added, “Think about it, God forbid, if this attacker had been a Syrian and the imam had not survived the attack, what could have happened, how far could the situation have escalated?”
The full text of Altaylı's article is as follows;
“Should we say, oh no, has it started!
I hope it hasn't. But if it has, I wouldn't be surprised.
Events expected to occur in destabilizing and destabilized countries have now begun in Turkey.
There was a knife attack on the Fatih Mosque Imam. The attacker first addressed the congregation, shouting, 'Wake up Muslims, unite against Israel,' and then, while reciting takbirs and chanting 'Down with Israel,' attacked the imam and those with him, seriously injuring them.
Although this may look like the work of a madman, it is actually an indicator that we have entered a dangerous period.
Think about it, God forbid, if this attacker had been a Syrian and the imam had not survived the attack, what could have happened, how far could the situation have escalated?
Or what could have happened if the person who carried out this attack had done so with different slogans?
This incident is a struck match.
The problem is that Turkey has now been turned into a powder keg.
And it has shown that the probability of such provocative attacks increasing during this period is very high.
It is a situation that those who have turned the country into a powder keg should think about, and that we, as ordinary citizens, should be alarmed by.”
