What is Theism?

Human beings are creatures that, by their very nature, have a need to believe. Every individual carries a soul, and humans form a whole through the union of body and soul. The most prominent feature and need of the spiritual structure is to believe in a higher power. For this reason, religious belief plays an important role in an individual's life. This belief can manifest in different forms in every community or individual. Theism, one of the belief systems that advocates for the existence of a God, stands out in this context.

What does Theism advocate?

Theism is derived from the Greek term "theos," which means "god." This concept was first used by the English clergyman Ralph Cudworth. Theism, also known as belief in God, believes in the existence of one or more gods who created the universe. In the understanding of Theism, the idea that God can send religions to humanity is defended.

According to the belief of Theism, God is in constant interaction with the world and humanity. Therefore, God can intervene in the world where humans live. He sends religions through prophets to guide humanity toward the right path.

What are the characteristics of Theism?

Theism views God as the foundation and first cause of everything. God is the one responsible for the creation and management of the universe. In the philosophy of Theism, certain theories have been put forward to prove the existence of God. According to Western philosophy, these theories (attributes of God) are as follows:

According to the ontological theory, God is flawless. The theory explains the existence of God through His being competent, flawless, and perfect.

According to the theory of the emergence of existence, God is the creator. Everything that exists needs a being that created it. Since the universe also came into existence later in the process of time, the one who created the universe is God.

The power of the Creator God is infinite. God's power is limitless and sufficient for everything. Although Aquinas and some philosophers stated that God's power has certain limits, Descartes argued that God's power is completely unlimited.

God is all-knowing. God possesses absolute knowledge.

God is independent of physical time and space. God is a power that transcends the universe.

God is indescribable.

God is independent of all emotions.

Considering all these theories, we can say that the path to reaching the existence of God essentially passes through religious experience.

Who is called a Theist?

People who believe that everything in the universe we live in was created by an infinite power for a specific purpose are called theists. Theists argue that the universe was created by the will of God. They believe in the religions sent by God or gods. Some of the theist philosophers and thinkers are as follows:
