14 MPs become mayoral candidates: Who was nominated from where?
14 members of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey have been nominated as mayoral candidates by their respective parties. The party with the highest number of MP candidates is the İYİ Party, while the MHP did not nominate any of its MPs.

The candidate selection process of political parties for the March 31 Local Administration Elections continues. Accordingly, some of the mayoral candidates consist of members of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. MPs nominated as mayoral candidates by their parties will resign from their parliamentary seats if elected. This situation will affect the arithmetic of the distribution of seats in Parliament.
AKP NOMINATED 4 MPS AS MAYORAL CANDIDATES
The AKP has nominated 4 of its MPs as mayoral candidates for the local elections. AKP Istanbul MP Murat Kurum was nominated as the Metropolitan Mayoral Candidate for Istanbul, AKP Eskişehir MP Nebi Hatipoğlu as the Metropolitan Mayoral Candidate for Eskişehir, and AKP Aydın MP Mustafa Savaş as the Metropolitan Mayoral Candidate for Aydın. AKP İzmir MP Ceyda Bölünmez Çankırı was nominated as the Mayoral Candidate for İzmir's Konak district.
The AKP has 264 MPs in Parliament. If the candidates are elected, the number of seats held by the AKP will drop to 260.
THE PARTY WITH THE MOST MP CANDIDATES IS THE İYİ PARTY
The party that nominated the most MPs as mayoral candidates was the İYİ Party. The İYİ Party determined 5 of its MPs as mayoral candidates for the local elections. Accordingly, Istanbul MP Mehmet Satuk Buğra Kavuncu was nominated for the Istanbul Metropolitan Mayoral candidacy, İzmir MP Ümit Özlale for the İzmir Metropolitan Mayoral candidacy, Adana MP Ayyüce Türkeş Taş for the Adana Metropolitan Mayoral candidacy, Bursa MP Yüksel Selçuk Türkoğlu for the Bursa Metropolitan Mayoral candidacy, and Balıkesir MP Turhan Özmez for the Balıkesir Metropolitan Mayoral candidacy.
The İYİ Party, which won 43 seats in Parliament in the May 14, 2023 General Elections, currently has 38 seats following resignations and expulsions. If the candidates are elected, the İYİ Party will have 33 MPs in Parliament.
IF THE SAADET GROUP'S MPS ARE ELECTED, THE PARLIAMENTARY GROUP WILL DISSOLVE
Following the May 14, 2023 General Elections, the Future Party (Gelecek Partisi) and the Felicity Party (Saadet Partisi), which each won 10 seats, merged to form the Saadet Group. Saadet Party Kocaeli MP Hasan Bitmez passed away in the hospital after falling ill at the Parliament General Assembly in recent months. Subsequently, CHP Kütahya MP Ali Fazıl Kasap joined the Saadet Party to prevent the dissolution of the Saadet Group.
The Saadet Group nominated 3 MPs as candidates for the local elections. Future Party Manisa MP Selçuk Özdağ was nominated for the Manisa Metropolitan Mayoral candidacy, Saadet Party Istanbul MP Birol Aydın for the Istanbul Metropolitan Mayoral candidacy, and Saadet Party Kayseri MP Mahmut Arıkan for the Kayseri Metropolitan Mayoral candidacy. If these MPs are elected, the number of MPs in the Saadet Group will drop to 17, causing the group to dissolve in Parliament.
CHP NOMINATED 2 MPS AS MAYORAL CANDIDATES
The Republican People's Party (CHP) nominated 2 of its MPs as mayoral candidates. Afyonkarahisar MP Burcu Köksal was nominated for the Afyonkarahisar Mayoral candidacy, and Kastamonu MP Hasan Baltacı for the Kastamonu Mayoral candidacy. The CHP has 128 MPs in Parliament.
MHP DID NOT NOMINATE ITS MPS
The only party that did not nominate its MPs as candidates was the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP). There are no MPs among the mayoral candidates announced so far by the MHP, which has 49 MPs in Parliament.
On the other hand, the election calendar for the Local Administration Elections to be held on March 31 is being managed by the Supreme Election Council (YSK). Political parties will submit their candidate lists by 17:00 on Tuesday, February 20, at the latest.
