Hürriyet columnist Abdulkadir Selvi has brought Turkey's stance on Sweden's NATO membership back to the agenda following the US downing of a Turkish combat drone in Syrian airspace.

Selvi stated, "The response to the drone will be given on the field, but there is a point I have observed; the intensity of Erdoğan's criticisms toward the US is increasing. The tone of his voice is rising. I wonder if this situation will go as far as re-evaluating the issue of Sweden's NATO membership?"

Selvi also noted the following:

"The previous atmosphere was that Sweden's membership would be approved in Parliament within the month of October. But after the US shot down our drone, Erdoğan may have made a new decision... A message could be sent to the US saying, 'Let your ally, the PKK terrorist organization, realize Sweden's membership to NATO, let's see.' I wonder; could the US have shot down Sweden's NATO membership at the same time it shot down the drone?"
