Acting mayor election won by CHP in Yüreğir to be repeated starting from the third round

The election for acting mayor in the Yüreğir district of Adana has returned to the agenda following a court decision. The Administrative Court issued a stay of execution for the vote held on April 29, in which CHP member Cafer Boyraz was elected acting mayor. According to the decision, the election will be repeated starting from the third round.

Yüreğir Mayor Ali Demirçalı was temporarily suspended from his duties by the Ministry of Interior on April 21, following his sentencing to 5 years, 3 months, and 10 days in prison for "bribery" in a case he was being tried in. Following this development, the Yüreğir Municipal Council convened in an extraordinary session to elect an acting mayor.

In the council, the CHP nominated Cafer Boyraz, while the AKP and MHP candidate was Tarık Özünal. As the required majority could not be reached in the first two rounds, the council moved to the third round. In this round, Boyraz received 21 votes and Özünal received 15, with one vote deemed invalid. With this result, Boyraz was elected as the acting mayor of Yüreğir.

Following the election, AKP's Tarık Özünal filed a lawsuit to cancel the vote, alleging that the principle of secret ballot was not followed. Evaluating the application, the court suspended the execution of the election process and ruled that the voting be repeated starting from the third round.

''NOT PROVEN WITH CONCRETE EVIDENCE''

The decision does not constitute a final ruling. Cafer Boyraz argued that the election was conducted in accordance with the legislation and stated that the necessary information and documents had been submitted to the case file. Boyraz claimed that the allegations were not proven with concrete evidence.

''Our necessary objection will be submitted to the Regional Administrative Court within the legal period following the notification of the decision.''

Unless a new decision to the contrary is issued during the objection process, the Yüreğir Municipal Council will reconvene. The acting mayor election, in which Boyraz and Özünal are competing, will be held again starting from the third round as specified in the court decision.
