Ahmet Özer, who was arrested as part of an investigation conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office Terrorism and Organized Crime Investigation Bureau, has been charged with "membership in an armed terrorist organization." A prison sentence of 7.5 to 15 years is being sought for Özer.

DATE AND VENUE SET FOR THE FIRST HEARING

The Istanbul 14th High Criminal Court, which will conduct the trial, announced the date of the first hearing as May 23 at 10:00 AM. According to the decision, the case will be heard in courtroom No. 1 located within the Silivri Marmara Open Prison Complex hearing halls.

WHY WILL IT BE HELD IN SILIVRI?

In the statement made by the court, it was noted that holding the hearing at the courthouse in Istanbul posed risks in terms of physical and security conditions, and that the principle of publicity could be compromised due to the hearing being open to the public. Taking into account the environmental conditions and density of the Istanbul Courthouse, the courtroom in Silivri with the appropriate security infrastructure was chosen.

HIGH PUBLIC INTEREST IN THE TRIAL

Due to the mayoral position Ahmet Özer previously held, the trial process is being followed closely by the public. The arrangements for admitting the press and spectators to the courtroom during the trial process are also a matter of curiosity. It is expected that the process will be observable in line with the principles of publicity and transparency.
