Ali Mahir Başarır: 'Fiscal discipline for retirees and civil servants, fiscal indiscipline for Demirören'

CHP Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır criticized those who seek fiscal discipline regarding the salary increase rates for retirees and civil servants—which became clear following the announcement of December inflation data—for not even speaking out against Demirören, who has not repaid the 340 million dollar loan taken from Vakıfbank. Başarır stated, "There is no fiscal discipline when fixing Demirören's debt at an exchange rate of 13 TL, which is equivalent to the salaries of 960 thousand retirees at today's rate! This is shamelessness!"

HE DID NOT REPAY THE DEBT DESPITE THE FIXED EXCHANGE RATE

Reminding that Demirören's debt of approximately 12 billion TL at today's exchange rate has still not been paid despite the exchange rate being fixed at 13 TL, Başarır said that granting an 11.54% raise to civil servant retirees and a 15.75% raise to SGK retirees is a violation of public rights. Stating that Demirören's 12 billion TL debt at today's rate is equivalent to the salaries of 960 thousand retirees, the CHP member Başarır used the following expressions:

"In 2021, the Demirören family's debt to Vakıfbank was 340 million dollars. This government, having lost its sense of shame, fixed this debt at a dollar exchange rate of 13 TL that day. Today, when we look at the Court of Accounts report for the State Economic Enterprises (KİT), the debt appears as 3.5 billion TL and it is still unpaid. If they had to pay this debt at today's dollar exchange rate, they would have paid 12 billion TL. Who will cover this loss of 8.5 billion TL? Is it you, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, is it you, Mehmet Şimşek, or is it you, Nebati? The rights of the underprivileged are at stake here. While the dollar has reached 35 TL today, there is no fiscal discipline when converting Demirören's debt at 13 Turkish Liras! This is shamelessness! This is a crime! This is immorality!
