Among the AKP's mayoral candidates for the March 31 local elections in Malatya, Mehmet Çınar, whose name is associated with the 'grey passport' scandal, was not nominated again.
İlhan Geçit was nominated to replace Yeşilyurt Mayor Mehmet Çınar, who came to public attention over allegations of 'human smuggling via grey passports'.
MADE A STATEMENT AFTER NOT BEING NOMINATED
AKP's Yeşilyurt Mayor Mehmet Çınar, who was not nominated for the local elections, made a statement on his social media account:
"I would like to express my gratitude, first and foremost, to our Chairman and President Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, for providing me the opportunity to serve my beloved Yeşilyurt for 6 years; and I offer my thanks to our dear fellow citizens who showed us favor, and to all our brothers and sisters who believed in us and stood by my side through every difficulty.
With our heads held high, we wrote a success story with record-breaking projects and works, focusing solely on providing service. Moreover, we did this against those who prioritize ambition and self-interest above all else, against those who try to make our city completely dependent on themselves, against those who try to ensure absolute permanence by feeding on chaos, and against those who engage in disinformation.
Without ever compromising this stance, we will continue to work for our cause and our party. We have full support for our Yeşilyurt Mayoral Candidate, Mr. İlhan Geçit. We will not stop, we will not pause; our cause is clear, our loyalty is eternal..."
THE GREY PASSPORT INCIDENT
It was revealed that 43 out of 45 people sent abroad with grey passports (service passports) under a protocol signed between the AKP-run Yeşilyurt Municipality in Malatya and the Malatya Personal Development World Association did not return.
As part of the investigation launched by the Malatya Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, a lawsuit was filed against former Yeşilyurt Deputy Mayor Bekir Karakuş, former Servi Mayor Ali Ayrancı, and Ersin Kilit, who is alleged to be the connection in Germany, with a demand for up to eight years in prison on charges of 'migrant smuggling'.
With the release of the detained former Servi Mayor Ali Ayrancı at the first hearing at the Malatya 10th Criminal Court of First Instance, there were no detained defendants left in the case.
