As the İmralı debate continues, a simultaneous move from the CHP: Özel's visit to Demirtaş is on the agenda

It has been announced that the meeting of the National Solidarity, Brotherhood and Democracy Commission, established in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, which had been postponed twice, will be held again today.

The commission is expected to prepare the legal framework for the new process to be carried out following the decision on dissolution and laying down arms announced by the terrorist organization PKK.

It was stated that Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya, Minister of National Defense Yaşar Güler, and National Intelligence Organization (MİT) President İbrahim Kalın will provide information to the commission during this 17th meeting.

With these discussions, it was stated that the “listening phase” of the commission will be completed, and subsequently, a critical question will come to the agenda: Will the commission members go to İmralı to receive information from Abdullah Öcalan?

It was recalled that MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli, in his statement on November 4, called for a delegation from the commission to go to İmralı.

It was reported that no clear stance has been put forward by the AKP wing regarding this call. According to the report in Nefes newspaper, the CHP is keeping its decision regarding a possible visit to İmralı dependent on the statement of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. CHP sources continue to maintain the assessment: “The President, Tayyip Erdoğan, must speak on this matter first. Then we will determine our position.”

According to the report by Nefes, if a decision is made for the commission to go to İmralı, a simultaneous step will be taken by the party.

Accordingly, it is planned that CHP Chairman Özgür Özel will visit Selahattin Demirtaş at Edirne Prison on the same day, provided that he has not been released.

When asked why Özel would make this visit simultaneously, it was reported that CHP staff explained: “Selahattin Demirtaş is one of the most important actors in the process. He led the HDP for many years and played a role in many stages.”

CHP officials, while drawing attention to the fact that Demirtaş is an elected politician, pointed out that the European Court of Human Rights' decision for his release has still not been implemented. The following views were expressed in the statement:

“There is an ECHR decision in place. Demirtaş should have been out long ago and contributing to this process. However, a democratic step in this direction has not yet been taken. Therefore, the planned visit will be a step supporting the ongoing process and the efforts toward the resolution of the Kurdish issue.”
