Asset dispute between CHP's Emir and AK Party's Gökçek escalates in Parliament

Tensions rose in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey during a session where the economic and social hardships faced by retirees were brought to the agenda.

Mutual accusations between AK Party and CHP deputies extended to allegations regarding personal assets.

The debate, which began after a motion submitted by the CHP to investigate the problems of retirees was rejected by the votes of the AKP and MHP, saw Ankara Deputy Adnan Beker draw attention to the poverty faced by retirees, stating, "Our retirees cannot even afford to buy chocolate for their grandchildren."

Emphasizing that the opposition is bringing real problems to Parliament, Beker reiterated that the solution is the government's responsibility.

Criticisms regarding the management of the economy and the inadequacy of pension salaries continued with the intervention of New Way Party's Ertuğrul Kaya. Kaya argued that the economic program being implemented contains incorrect diagnoses and treatments, and that these errors are exacerbating the country's deep economic distress.

AK Party Ankara Deputy Osman Gökçek claimed that the CHP is playing politics over retirees and stated that they are not sincere on this issue. In his comparisons regarding municipalities and social aid, he brought up the management failures of CHP-run municipalities. In his speech, Gökçek directly targeted CHP Group Deputy Chairman Murat Emir, making allegations that Emir had increased his assets after becoming a deputy; he further claimed that Emir had transferred various assets to his ex-wife.

Taking the floor in response to the criticisms, Murat Emir said that the accusations leveled against him do not reflect the truth and stated that he had acquired the majority of his personal assets before becoming a deputy. Emir said, "80 percent of the claims about my assets are lies. I acquired what I have before my time as a deputy, even as far back as 2012." He also rejected the claims regarding his ex-wife and explained that his assets were inherited from his father.

Emphasizing his professional background, Emir stated, "I have been a physician for 33 years; all my earnings, wealth, and tax records are clear." In his remarks that further fueled the debate, he targeted Gökçek as follows: "What is clear about you? Where did you earn what you have? Where did you get the money for those Beyaz TVs? Where did you get the money for those villas? Type 'bribery' into Google, and Melih Gökçek comes up."

Following this exchange, tensions in the session did not subside for some time, as the parties continued to question each other's ethical values and transparency. The polemic caused the assets and income sources of politicians to be brought back into public debate.
