Azerbaijan heads to the polls

Azerbaijanis will head to the polls for the 7th time tomorrow to elect their members of parliament. 

Following President Ilham Aliyev's decision to dissolve parliament on June 28 and call for early elections, the country entered an election process that will shape the new parliament.

In the election, 990 candidates will compete for 125 seats in the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan.

Candidates from 25 political parties as well as independent candidates will participate in the election, in which 6 million 421 thousand registered voters are eligible to cast their ballots.

112 THOUSAND DOMESTIC AND 604 THOUSAND INTERNATIONAL OBSERVERS WILL PARTICIPATE

Observer delegations from international organizations such as the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Organization of Turkic States, and the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic States will monitor the election. The Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) delegation is also among the groups that will observe the election in Azerbaijan.

Voting will begin at 08:00 local time and end at 19:00. The campaign period began on August 9 and ends at 08:00 on the morning of August 31.

POLLING STATIONS ESTABLISHED IN LIBERATED REGIONS

Polling stations have also been established in the regions Azerbaijan liberated from Armenian occupation. Thus, for the first time in 30 years, parliamentary elections will be held across all of Azerbaijan's territories.

More than 42 thousand voters will cast their ballots in Shusha, the symbolic city of Karabakh; in Khankendi, which was once used as a "capital" by the separatist Armenian administration; as well as in Khojaly, Khojavend, Aghdara, Aghdam, Jabrayil, Fuzuli, Zangilan, Gubadli, Lachin, and Kalbajar.
