Backlash against HÜDA PAR for targeting the first 4 articles of the Constitution: What exactly are you after!

The statements made by Zekeriya Yapıcıoğlu, Chairman of HÜDA PAR, which is known for its proximity to Hezbollah, regarding the new constitution debates during a television program he attended, have caused a major public outcry.

HÜDA PAR Chairman Zekeriya Yapıcıoğlu, who entered the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) on the AKP lists in the May 14 General Elections and is known for his proximity to Hezbollah, made statements regarding the new constitution debates during a television program he attended.

Yapıcıoğlu said, "I said it one by one as if explaining it to a fool, yet they insist on not understanding." Yapıcıoğlu also expressed his opposition to Article 4 of the Constitution openly while using similar expressions in an environment where he came together with People's Alliance partners and force commanders at the Malazgirt ceremonies.

Yapıcıoğlu continued as follows:

"We are saying that Article 4 of the Constitution should not exist. Let me say it again while looking at the camera. We are saying that Article 4 of the Constitution should not exist. Having unchangeable articles in the Constitution does not mean that we should change all the articles you call unchangeable."

Article 4 of the Constitution emphasizes the unchangeability of the first three articles, which set out the fundamental characteristics of the Republic of Turkey. Arguing that this article places a mortgage on the will of future generations, Yapıcıoğlu stated that they are open to negotiations on other articles.

 

BACKLASH AGAINST YAPICIOĞLU CONTINUES

Following these statements, the backlash against HÜDA PAR Chairman Zekeriya Yapıcıoğlu grew like an avalanche. Another reaction to Yapıcıoğlu came from the President of the Istanbul Bar Association, Filiz Saraç.

Istanbul Bar Association President Filiz Saraç stated that the first three articles of the Constitution are the fundamental mortar of the Republic and said, "No one can displace the foundation stones of our Republic!" Reminding specifically of Article 4 of the Constitution, Saraç emphasized the expression, "The first three articles cannot be changed, and their amendment cannot even be proposed."

In her statement, Saraç noted that Turkish women exist in social life thanks to the Secular Republic and that they will never compromise on the gains of the Republic. She also expressed her reaction by stating that those who brought these mentalities into the Parliament should be held accountable.

Singer Mustafa Sandal also reacted to Zekeriya Yapıcıoğlu's statements by quoting them and saying, "We are also against those who are against the 4th article! It is a subject closed to debate, there is no point in talking nonsense!"

News anchor Ece Üner was also among those who reacted to the reactionary HÜDA PAR. In her post, Üner said, "Something caught my attention... While we are trying to understand what happened to Narin, on the other side, the leader of HÜDA PAR is explaining every evening on a television program that Article 4 of the Constitution should be changed. What exactly are you after?"

WHAT ARE THE FIRST 4 ARTICLES OF THE CONSTITUTION THAT CANNOT BE DEBATED?

I. Form of the State

ARTICLE 1- The State of Turkey is a Republic.

II. Characteristics of the Republic

ARTICLE 2- The Republic of Turkey is a democratic, secular and social state governed by the rule of law, within the notions of public peace, national solidarity and justice, respecting human rights, loyal to the nationalism of Atatürk, and based on the fundamental tenets set forth in the Preamble.

III. Integrity of the State, official language, flag, national anthem and capital

ARTICLE 3- The State of Turkey, with its territory and nation, is an indivisible entity. Its language is Turkish.

Its flag, the form of which is specified in the relevant law, is the white crescent and star on a red background.

Its national anthem is the “Independence March” (İstiklal Marşı).

Its capital is Ankara.

IV. Provisions that cannot be changed

ARTICLE 4- The provision of Article 1 of the Constitution, which states that the form of the State is a Republic, the characteristics of the Republic in Article 2, and the provisions of Article 3 cannot be changed, and their amendment cannot be proposed.
