Bahçeli's stance awaited following 'absolute nullity' ruling at CHP convention

In the legal process concerning the Republican People's Party (CHP) convention, the 36th Civil Chamber of the Ankara Regional Court of Justice has issued a ruling of "absolute nullity." With this decision, it was reported that former CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and his team would continue in their roles. It was also decided that the staff led by Özgür Özel, who had ushered in a new era in party management, would be temporarily suspended from their duties.

While there have been comments suggesting that pressure on the opposition has increased in recent years, there is also curiosity regarding what steps the current administration, which enabled the CHP to become the leading party in an election for the first time in 47 years, will take.

BAHÇELİ'S APPROACH TO THE ISSUE DREW ATTENTION

Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chairman Devlet Bahçeli had answered questions regarding the convention lawsuit following his group meeting on May 5. In his remarks, Bahçeli stated, “The CHP is an important political institution that has existed since the day the Republic was founded. We hope that this institution will not be allowed to be stirred up from within, fragmented, damaged legally, or used for other purposes. Therefore, instead of continuing on its path through division, harsh criticism, and belittling the people it is with, the CHP should choose to meet with the nation, and the CHP should fulfill the historical responsibility that falls upon it.”

With the court's latest decision, how Bahçeli will position himself politically on this matter and the actions the MHP will take have become among the most discussed topics in political circles.

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, stating that he found Bahçeli's messages positive, said, “The statement made by Mr. Bahçeli is valuable; it is the statement that should have been made. A political party does not just show sportsmanship by reacting to an irregular practice carried out against another political party through the judiciary. It is also defending the very ground upon which it itself exists. We are defending democracy. If the result were otherwise, no political party chairman in the 104-year-old Republic would have been changed through debate. It is a convention that has given honor to both the winner and the loser.”
