U.S. President Joe Biden discussed how Washington would respond following Iran's April 13 attack on Israel during a phone call with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
A statement from the White House indicated that Biden urged Congressional leaders to urgently approve a $105 billion supplemental spending package, which includes $61.4 billion for Ukraine and $14.3 billion for Israel.
House Speaker Mike Johnson stated after the call that he understands the necessity of standing with Israel and will work to expedite the approval process for the spending package this week.
In a preliminary vote held in December regarding whether to bring the spending package request to a vote in the 100-member U.S. Senate, 49 senators voted "yes" and 51 senators voted "no."
All Republicans had voted "no," citing the failure to meet their demands for stricter measures to increase security at the U.S.-Mexico border.
