CHP Central Executive Board member Berhan Şimşek has announced that he is stepping down from his position in the party leadership.
It was stated that Şimşek resigned from his CHP Central Executive Board membership until the cases against him are concluded.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Footage has emerged allegedly showing CHP Deputy Chairman Berhan Şimşek committing violence against his former partner, Özlem Şanver, with whom he was reportedly in a relationship for approximately 10 years.
In the footage, it is alleged that Şimşek kicked Şanver in the leg and then attempted to force her into the house as she tried to break free from his grasp. In the video, Şanver can be heard shouting "Let me go" as she is taken inside.
In April 2026, Şanver had requested protection under Law No. 6284, stating that she had been subjected to psychological and physical violence. Following the application, the Istanbul Anatolian 1st Family Court had ordered a two-month restraining and protection order against Berhan Şimşek.
It was stated that with an additional court decision dated June 29, it was ruled that the measures would continue for another two months.
Berhan Şimşek had previously stated regarding the allegations, "I did not even lay a finger on her; there is no concrete evidence regarding the allegations to date." It was reported that Şanver, however, shared an Official Forensic Case Report dated October 21, 2021, issued by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Health İstanbul Medeniyet University Göztepe Training and Research Hospital, as well as the official police complaint report.
