Muratpaşa Mayor Ümit Uysal, who had announced he would be a candidate for chairman at the CHP's convention on April 6, has announced his withdrawal from the race to prevent any damage to his party.

Antalya Muratpaşa Mayor Ümit Uysal had previously announced his candidacy for the chairmanship at the CHP convention to be held on April 6.

Subsequently, Ümit Uysal announced in a statement that he was withdrawing from the race. In his statement, Uysal included the following remarks:

''I have decided not to pursue my candidacy in order to avoid damaging my party''

WHO IS ÜMİT UYSAL?

Ümit Uysal was born in 1970 in the Afşin district of Kahramanmaraş. Growing up as the child of a teacher father and family, Uysal spent his childhood years in Antalya. During the September 12, 1980 military coup, he completed his middle and high school education in İzmir as a state-funded boarding student because the Antalya High School dormitory was closed. He graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Law in 1991. During his university years, he wrote short stories for literary magazines and took an interest in cinema and theater.

Ümit Uysal began practicing law in Antalya in 1991 and joined the Republican People's Party (CHP) in the same year. His political journey within the CHP continued with roles such as provincial board member and youth branch president. In 2001, at just 31 years old, he was elected as the CHP Antalya Provincial Chairman. Under Uysal's provincial chairmanship, the CHP won 8 parliamentary seats from Antalya in the 2002 general elections.

Ümit Uysal was nominated as the Muratpaşa mayoral candidate in the 2014 local elections and became mayor with the choice of the people of Muratpaşa. He has won many national and international awards with the projects he carried out in the municipality. In the March 31, 2019 local elections, he was re-elected mayor by receiving a record 65 percent of the vote from the people of Muratpaşa.

Married and a father of two, Ümit Uysal is fluent in English. He also has a short story book titled "Lavinya'nın Aşkla İmtihanı" (Lavinya's Test with Love).
