Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor and presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu was detained on March 19 as part of a "financial crimes" investigation into the IMM, and after a 4-day detention period, he was arrested by the duty court on March 23 and sent to Silivri Prison.
Sharing a comprehensive statement with the public for the first time despite two months having passed since his arrest, İmamoğlu continued his harsh criticism of the government in a message published on the Presidential Candidate Office's social media account.
In his statement, İmamoğlu made a reference to the December 17-25 operations, drawing attention to the plots of FETÖ at that time, and said that the file that led to his arrest was prepared with a similar mindset.
Addressing the government directly, İmamoğlu used the phrase "Even if you are deceived, do not deceive!" and said the following:
"2 months have passed;
Neither shoeboxes full of money,
Nor safes overflowing with dollars,
Nor 300 thousand euro 'gift' watches,
Nor million-dollar off-shore accounts,
Nor phone wiretaps,
Nor the scandalous e-mails scattered around in previous events, HAVE EMERGED!
Yet your biggest dream was to turn all of these into a video and show them to the nation at a group meeting. IT DID NOT HAPPEN!
Neither did anything come out of the bag, nor did the truth come to light!
I know it bothers you, but unfortunately, you have been deceived again.
Does it suit a politician responsible for governing the great Republic of Turkey to engage in politics by following an imaginary organization and imaginary claims?
To get out of this swamp of confession and not sink further into the mud, the steps to be taken are clear.
Form a committee of legal-expert politicians you trust and have them examine this file. Any objective jurist will see that this file is a VIRTUAL file that does not contain a single PIECE OF EVIDENCE.
