Bülent Arınç reacts to the physical assault in the Turkish Parliament: 'It did not suit our Parliament'

Following the physical assault that took place in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) General Assembly, former Parliament Speaker Bülent Arınç stated in a social media post that the incident was a great disgrace and did not suit the TBMM.

Following the events that took place in the TBMM General Assembly on Friday, August 16, former Parliament Speaker Bülent Arınç made a statement via social media.

Arınç described the assault by AKP member Alpay Özalan against TİP MP Ahmet Şık as a "great disgrace," emphasizing that such behavior does not suit the TBMM.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The TBMM General Assembly convened in an extraordinary session at the call of the opposition to discuss the Constitutional Court's ruling regarding Can Atalay. Following TİP MP Ahmet Şık's remarks directed at the AKP benches, stating, "The biggest terrorist organization in this country is the one sitting in these benches," AKP member Alpay Özalan approached the podium and physically intervened. During the incident, DEM Party member Gülistan Koçyiğit suffered a cut to her eyebrow, and CHP member Okan Konuralp was injured.

IMPOSSIBLE TO CONDONE

In his statement on his social media account, former Parliament Speaker Bülent Arınç said, "You can object from your seat, you can shout from across the room, you can be disruptive, but coming all the way to the podium and physically intervening with the person at the podium is absolutely not right. Whoever does it, and whoever it is done against, this is a great disgrace and an approach that is impossible to condone."

Arınç also criticized the Speaker of the Parliament, stating, "We see that the Speaker of the Parliament only invited them to speak with clean language, but he could not prevent the events that followed." He further noted that the events eroded the high and reliable moral personality of the TBMM in the eyes of the public, adding, "Setting a bad example for the incidents of assault and threats occurring in the streets, stadiums, homes, schools, hospitals, in short, in every area of life, did not suit our Parliament."
