DEM Party Co-Chair Tülay Hatimoğulları, who attended the September 1 World Peace Day rally organized by the Istanbul Labor, Peace and Democracy Forces at Kadıköy Pier, made significant statements regarding the peace process in Turkey and the region.
In her speech at the rally, Hatimoğulları shared her criticisms regarding the process that the People's Alliance calls a "Terror-Free Turkey" and touched upon regional developments such as Syria and Gaza.
WHAT IS HAPPENING IN SYRIA AND GAZA
Drawing attention to Israel's bombing attacks in Gaza, Hatimoğulları emphasized that the Palestinian people are oppressed:
“What is happening in Palestine today is the zero point of humanity. We stand with the just cause of the Palestinian people.”
Touching upon the attacks against the Druze and Alawite peoples in Syria, Hatimoğulları said, “The Druze people in Syria are being tortured and massacred. Humanitarian aid has still not reached the Alawites. Alawites from Turkey and Europe want to show solidarity with the people there. We are becoming a voice for them. A humanitarian aid corridor must be opened immediately.”
CALL FOR MEETING WITH ÖCALAN
The most striking part of Hatimoğulları's speech was about the situation of PKK terrorist organization leader Abdullah Öcalan. Hatimoğulları used the following expressions regarding Öcalan:
“One of the most important issues the commission needs to take action on is ensuring a meeting as soon as possible with Mr. Abdullah Öcalan, whom we have declared as the chief negotiator for the Kurdish people and ourselves. An environment must be provided where Öcalan can work freely, live freely, and meet with all segments of society.”
Stating that the peace process is a historic opportunity for Turkey and the Middle East, Hatimoğulları said, “There is no need to be afraid, to hesitate, or to simply pursue party interests. Be brave, be sincere, take action, and break your habits.”
Expressing that their delegation held a meeting with Öcalan last Thursday, Hatimoğulları said, “I would like to convey Mr. Öcalan’s greetings and love from here.”
CRITICISM OF PRESSURE ON DEMOCRACY AND THE OPPOSITION
Pointing to the importance of sincerity in the so-called opening process, Hatimoğulları reacted to the pressure on the opposition:
“On one hand, you will talk about peace, and on the other, you will continue operations against the opposition. It is unacceptable that metropolitan and district mayors in Istanbul are imprisoned. We do not accept the appointed trustees or the pressure on the opposition. They must be reinstated to their duties immediately.”
Drawing attention to the role of women in the struggle for peace, Hatimoğulları said, “The Saturday Mothers and Peace Mothers have paid the greatest price and continue to pay it. We respectfully salute their struggle. Women have been the main subjects in the construction of peace.” she said.
Hatimoğulları concluded her speech by touching upon worker and public solidarity:
“Peace is not just the silencing of weapons; it is justice, equality, brotherhood, and freedom. No one will present peace to us on a silver platter. We will struggle and we will gift peace to our children.”
