Aydın Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Özlem Çerçioğlu's joining of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) has been criticized by CHP Aydın Deputy Süleyman Bülbül.
In a statement made via social media, Bülbül recalled Çerçioğlu's previous remarks defending the Istanbul Convention, stating that this change should be questioned in terms of women's rights.
Addressing Çerçioğlu, Bülbül said, "You said that the Istanbul Convention saves lives. You stated that terminating the convention meant supporting violence against women. Now, you are standing with those who terminated the convention. In this situation, how will you look women in the face?"
Concluding his statement with the words "History will not forget you," Bülbül drew attention to how this political move by Çerçioğlu would be evaluated in the long term.
In his social media statement, Bülbül addressed Çerçioğlu with the following words:
You said, "The Istanbul Convention saves lives."
You said, "Terminating it means siding with violence against women."
Today, you are standing with those who terminated the convention.
Now tell me, what do you say about the Istanbul Convention?
How will you look women in the face under the patronage of the President who terminated the convention?'
Bülbül ended his message with the words, "History will not forget you."
