CHP calls for the release of Murat Çalık

CHP Deputy Chair Zeliha Aksaz Şahbaz issued a written statement regarding the health status of detained Beylikdüzü Mayor Mehmet Murat Çalık. Recalling that Çalık has previously suffered from serious health issues such as leukemia and salivary gland cancer, Şahbaz emphasized that the isolation conditions in prison are endangering his health.

“Çalık has lost 20 kilos under severe isolation conditions in prison, and his immune system is suppressed. This situation is documented by medical reports, and it is clear that his treatment and living conditions must comply with medical standards,” she stated.

ÇALIK’S DETENTION IS UNLAWFUL

Zeliha Aksaz Şahbaz noted that Mehmet Murat Çalık has been detained for 130 days without an indictment being prepared and without concrete evidence. Şahbaz pointed out that the legal processes regarding Çalık are not functioning correctly either. 

UNDER SEVERE ISOLATION CONDITIONS

Stating that Çalık was sent back to prison without a legal justification while he was being treated in the hospital, Şahbaz used the following expressions:

“He is currently being held under severe isolation in unhealthy conditions. Isolation is not merely a disciplinary penalty or a security measure. When applied for a long period, this situation falls under the scope of torture and ill-treatment. There is a clear violation of rights in terms of both the Constitution and international human rights conventions.”

HEALTH STATUS POSES A SERIOUS DANGER

Pointing out that the right to life of a prisoner who has a risk of leukemia recurrence and suffers from serious health problems is in danger, Şahbaz stated that detention has ceased to be a measure and has become a punishment that threatens the right to life. “Our demand is clear; detention must be ended immediately, he must be ensured to live in a healthy environment with his family, and a fair trial process in accordance with the law and human rights must be conducted,” she said.
