CHP Şanlıurfa Deputy Mahmut Tanal has prepared a bill to change the name of the Karayazı district in the province of Erzurum to “Güzelyazı.”
"THE CHANGE MUST START WITH ITS NAME"
The justification for the aforementioned bill submitted by Tanal to the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) was explained as follows:
The name “Karayazı” of the district, which experiences heavy migration to western provinces, whose population decreases year by year, and which had a population of 25 thousand 543 in 2022 according to TUIK data, creates negative connotations in the mind. According to the Turkish Language Association, the dictionary meaning of “kara yazı,” written as two words, is “a destiny believed to be written badly; bad luck, misfortune, the opposite of good luck.” Our beautiful district has become a prisoner of the name “Karayazı,” which evokes bad and negative connotations. The controversial name of this high-altitude southern district of Erzurum has practically become the district’s “dark destiny” or ill-fated fortune. For this reason, the change in the Karayazı district must start with the name “Karayazı.” Changing the name of Karayazı will be an important step for the district’s image and development. With the aforementioned proposal, it is aimed to change the name of Erzurum’s district “Karayazı” to “Güzelyazı.”
