CHP's TRT move for İmamoğlu's trial: It will also cover public officials

The Republican People's Party (CHP) has submitted a legislative proposal to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) to ensure that the judicial process of presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu can be monitored openly by the public. The proposal, bearing the signatures of CHP Group Deputy Chairs Murat Emir, Gökhan Günaydın, and Ali Mahir Başarır, aims to allow voters to transparently follow the trial processes of the public officials they have elected.

According to the report by Cumhuriyet, the justification for the proposal cites Article 141 of the Constitution, stating that court hearings are open to everyone and that citizens have the right to observe these proceedings. In this context, it was emphasized that voters should have the right to directly learn about the allegations and defenses concerning the public officials they have elected. This is intended to prevent the spread of misleading information to the public.

The legislative proposal requests the right to live-broadcast trials only for public officials who have been elected to office. Stating that the decision to broadcast can be made by the relevant court, the proposal includes the following statement: "With the request and consent of the defendant, the victim, and the aggrieved party, the relevant court may decide for the trial to be broadcast by TRT or on the internet in cases involving individuals holding an elected public office."
