CHP MP reacts to 'departure tax' hike: 'Abolish this Deli Dumrul tax entirely'

CHP Istanbul MP Oğuz Kaan Salıcı has strongly reacted to the planned increase in Turkey's international departure tax. He compared the plan to raise the current 150 TL fee to 3,000 TL to a "Deli Dumrul tax." Salıcı stated that this new increase, in addition to existing costs like passports and visas, would push the cost of traveling abroad from Turkey to between 20,000 and 30,000 lira.

In a new tax package expected to be submitted to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) by the government, it has been proposed that the current international departure tax of 150 TL be increased to 3,000 TL.

CHP Istanbul MP Oğuz Kaan Salıcı reacted to this increase.

Comparing the plan to raise the 150 TL fee to 3,000 TL to a "Deli Dumrul tax", Salıcı said in a statement on social media:

"If we are paying for a passport, if we are paying taxes when buying a plane ticket, why are we paying an international departure tax again at the airport? They are planning to raise this fee from 150 lira to 3,000 lira. It's a stamp, just a stamp. The government is putting a 3,000 lira price tag on a stamp. Where else in the world is this kind of tax seen?

Even though they shouldn't be collecting it at all, they are planning to show 3,000 TL and settle for 1,500 TL, the 'clever ones.' Between passports, visas, transportation, and fees, the cost of just setting foot outside of Turkey is roughly 20,000 to 30,000 lira. This is a blatant violation of the freedom to travel. Traveling is a right for everyone, not just the ultra-wealthy. I am calling out the tax tricksters. Abolish this Deli Dumrul tax entirely. Furthermore, do not charge young people for passports at all."
