Primary election application process begins in CHP: Who was the first nomination for?

The Republican People's Party (CHP) will hold a primary election on March 23 to determine its presidential candidate. CHP Group Deputy Chairman Murat Emir announced that the application process for candidacy has begun within this scope. Stating that the signature process for MPs to nominate candidates has also started, Emir expressed that the process is expected to be completed within a few days.

"THE SIGNATURE PROCESS HAS BEGUN"

CHP Group Deputy Chairman Murat Emir stated that, in accordance with the directive announced by the party, MPs can nominate candidates in line with the established calendar. Emir made the following statement:

"The signature process for the presidential candidacy has begun within the group. We anticipate the process to be completed within a few days. Our MPs who wish to do so are coming to the Group Presidency and signing for the names they want to see as the presidential candidate, in accordance with our directive."

Details regarding the candidacy process were shared in a message sent to MPs with the signatures of CHP Group Deputy Chairmen Gökhan Günaydın, Murat Emir, and Ali Mahir Başarır.

The statement reminded that the process of determining the presidential candidate will be carried out through a primary election based on party members. The message included the following statements:

"Dear MPs, as is known, a directive has been prepared regarding the member-based primary election process organized by our party to determine its presidential candidate. In accordance with the aforementioned directive, our MP colleagues will be able to provide their signatures between February 17 and February 21, 2025, for those they deem suitable among individuals who meet the constitutional criteria to become President. Individuals who can secure the signatures of at least 20 MPs will be able to become candidates. Our MPs will be able to provide signatures for more than one person. Signature sheets will be available in the Group Executive Board meeting room during working hours on the specified dates."

FIRST NOMINATION MADE FOR EKREM İMAMOĞLU

Within the scope of the primary election process, the first nomination was made by CHP Giresun MP Elvan Işık Gezmiş. Gezmiş announced that she nominated Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu as a presidential candidate with a petition she shared on her social media account.

According to the calendar announced by the CHP, applications for candidacy will continue until February 21. Names that receive the signatures of at least 20 MPs will be included in the primary election process as presidential candidates. The CHP's presidential candidate will be determined by the primary election to be held on March 23.
