CHP protest decision: New legislative year begins in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey

The Grand National Assembly of Turkey will welcome the new legislative year with a special session starting tomorrow at 14:00. The Republican People's Party (CHP) has decided not to attend this session, where President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is expected to deliver a speech, in protest of operations targeting municipalities and the arrest of mayors.

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, while announcing this decision, stated, "Last year, we welcomed the President by standing up; this year, we will welcome him neither standing nor sitting. Because there has been an attempted coup against us." Özel also indicated that they would not attend the reception the President will be attending.

During last year's opening ceremony, some CHP members stood up when President Erdoğan entered the hall, while others chose to wait in the lobby. This year, however, the CHP has taken a firmer stance by deciding not to attend the opening ceremony at all.

PROMINENT REGULATIONS IN THE LEGISLATIVE YEAR

In this legislative year, the work of the National Solidarity, Brotherhood, and Democracy Commission stands out. Following the symbolic disarmament ceremony of the terrorist organization PKK, intensive efforts will be focused on issues such as integration and the "right to hope." In particular, the "Return Home" law and execution regulations for those leaving the terrorist organization are awaited with interest.

11TH JUDICIAL PACKAGE ON THE AGENDA

According to statements by Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç, the 11th Judicial Package, which will be submitted to the TBMM this legislative year, will also be an important agenda item. This package will address issues such as increasing penalties based on age for children driven to crime, internet fraud, and virtual betting. Additionally, regulations regarding traffic-related assaults will also be included in this package.
