As investigations and detention orders targeting CHP-run municipalities continue unabated, the party leadership is taking its first comprehensive step against these developments. The operations, which gained momentum following the arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor and presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu on March 19, have recently extended to the municipalities of Antalya, Adıyaman, and Manavgat.
While CHP sources are united in the view that the operations are "political," there has been talk in party circles that a "tougher struggle" will now be waged against this pressure. The first expected step has now been taken.
CRITICAL MEETING ON JULY 10
According to information obtained, the CHP Headquarters has summoned all mayors to Ankara on Thursday, July 10. With this meeting, the party aims to both emphasize solidarity and develop a joint stance against the operations.
The meeting is expected to be the party's largest local government summit since the elections. At the gathering, which will be chaired by Chairman Özgür Özel, the strategy to be followed in the coming period and potential action plans will be discussed.
CHP officials evaluate the operations targeting municipalities similarly to the March 19 process. Party sources are sending the message: "This process, which began with the attempted coup against the İBB, has now spread to our provincial and district municipalities. However, we will not take a step back."
In party circles, it is being discussed that after the meeting in Ankara, solidarity visits to the municipalities targeted by the operations will be increased, and public rallies may be brought back onto the agenda.
Furthermore, in the press statement expected to be made after the meeting, both an emphasis on the rule of law and the determination of local governments against central pressure will be highlighted.
The CHP is expected to announce a new roadmap following the Ankara meeting.
