CHP's participation in elections becomes a subject of debate: Warning that 'the risk is great if the congress period is exceeded'

Ayhan Sefer Üstün from the Gelecek Party issued a striking warning regarding the Republican People's Party's (CHP) ordinary convention process and relevant legislation in a statement made via social media. Üstün suggested that there is a risk that the CHP could lose its eligibility to participate in elections if its congresses are not held within the legal timeframe.

Sharing his post under the title "The abyss of the judiciary... Crisis, turmoil, chaos... The ultimate goal: division... The risk of the CHP being unable to enter the election," Üstün listed the negative scenarios that could arise following the Ankara Regional Court of Justice's decision regarding the CHP's 38th Ordinary Convention. According to Üstün, the court ruled for the cancellation of the CHP's 38th Convention and for the party to return to the status it held prior to the 37th Convention. It was stated that this could add a new dimension to the processes the party might legally face.

According to the Law on Political Parties, parties are required to complete their grand congresses at least once every three years. Reminding that the last valid congress of the CHP was held on July 26, 2020, Üstün stated that if the legal period is exceeded, both administrative legitimacy could be questioned and participation in elections could be jeopardized.

In his statement, where he drew attention to the party charter, Ayhan Sefer Üstün included the expression, "There is a risk that parties that have not held their district, provincial, and grand congresses twice in a row will lose their eligibility to participate in elections."

Describing these recent developments as "crisis, turmoil, and chaos," Üstün stated that the process could have political consequences.
