Claims that İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Cemil Tugay will join the AK Party have returned to the agenda in Ankara political circles.
Tugay, who resigned from the CHP on June 19, had previously announced that he would continue his path as an independent and had denied allegations that he would join the AKP.
Activity in political circles increased after Tugay was received by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at Beştepe on September 30.
Following this meeting, the fact that Tugay terminated his membership in the Atatürkist Thought Association via e-Devlet was also cited among the developments strengthening the claims.
Finally, it was alleged that Tugay would join the party at the AKP Group Meeting to be held on October 7 and that his badge would be pinned on by President Erdoğan.
No official statement has been made regarding the matter.
If the claim materializes, the AKP will have moved into a management position at the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality for the first time. All eyes are now turned to the group meeting on October 7.
