Clear response from the ruling front regarding early election and CHP closure claims

Rumors of an early election have recently returned to the agenda in political circles. These discussions gained momentum, particularly following statements by Saadet Party Chairman Mahmut Arıkan suggesting that a "snap election" could be held in the autumn. The opposition frequently voices claims that the government is preparing a new election plan and that a closure case could be filed against the CHP.

Some members of parliament from the Nation Alliance suggest that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan might create a surprise election agenda to pave the way for his third candidacy in the presidential elections. Despite this claim, the reactions from the AK Party and the People's Alliance front are quite clear: elections will be held on time.

A high-level figure from the AK Party management noted, "These are stories made up by the opposition; the probability is zero," adding that there is no by-election on the agenda and that the opposition is trying to occupy public opinion with such discussions. Within the party, emphasis is placed on the importance of holding elections on time and in a stable environment.

According to the opposition's claims, the reasons for a possible early election include an alleged crisis in the country's governance, the government's search for new financial resources, and economic measures. However, the ruling party points out that elections should be held on their scheduled date and argues that the current system provides stability.

IS A CLOSURE CASE AGAINST THE CHP ON THE AGENDA?

The possibility of a closure case against the CHP is also being discussed in the corridors recently. Allegations of various irregularities during the 2023 CHP congress and claims that some mayors provided financial contributions to the party management are being raised. Following these developments, CHP Chairman Özgür Özel hinted that the party organization would be prepared, stating that it might be necessary to "keep a party on the sidelines" against the possibility of the party being closed.

The AK Party wing looks at the issue from a different perspective. Some officials argue that the procedure for closing a party has been made quite difficult with the constitutional amendments made during their party's term in power, and that it is not possible to close parties for financial reasons. A party member assessed, "If political parties commit irregularities in financial matters, the Constitutional Court can seize their revenues. However, this does not mean that a closure case will be filed."

DISCUSSIONS ON ABSOLUTE NULLITY

The "absolute nullity" case, which arose due to some allegations during the 2023 CHP congress, also maintains its place on the agenda. Legal experts within the AK Party argue that it is difficult to obtain results from this case due to loopholes in the Law on Political Parties. Party officials state that there is no clear legal equivalent for irregularities in the election of party delegates and congresses, and that a new legal regulation is needed on this matter.

However, there is no such legislative change on the AK Party's agenda, and it is not possible for a potential regulation to be applied retroactively. Although discussions on addressing legal loopholes in the future continue, the fate of the current processes regarding the CHP depends on the decisions to be made by the courts.
