Constitutional Court to take up YENİ Party name dispute on its agenda tomorrow

The Constitutional Court (AYM) will deliberate tomorrow on the request to declare the name of the YENİ Party void and remove it from the political parties registry, on the grounds that it is "contrary to the Law on Political Parties."

The process began following an application by the Yenilik Party citing name similarity regarding the YENİ Party name. Following the application, the Supreme Court of Appeals Chief Public Prosecutor's Office had given the YENİ Party a deadline to change its name.

The Chief Public Prosecutor's Office referred the matter to the Constitutional Court after the deadline expired on September 18. The High Court has now placed the request regarding the YENİ Party's name on the General Assembly's agenda.

As part of its review, the Constitutional Court is expected to grant the YENİ Party time to submit a defense. The General Assembly will reach a decision following the submission of the Supreme Court of Appeals Chief Public Prosecutor's Office's letter, the opinion of the Yenilik Party, and the defense of the YENİ Party.

If the High Court determines there is a violation, it may decide to invalidate the YENİ Party name and strike it from the political parties registry. It is noted that the YENİ Party has maintained a stance of not changing its name until the Constitutional Court's decision.
