Convention excitement in CHP: Özgür Özel is the sole candidate! How many delegates will vote?

The CHP will hold its 22nd Extraordinary Convention today. In this convention, the third to be held in the last 2 years—including one ordinary and two extraordinary ones—Istanbul delegates, as well as members of the Party Assembly (PM) and the High Disciplinary Board (YDK), will not cast votes. A total of 1,127 delegates will be eligible to vote at the convention. Current Chairman Özgür Özel is entering the election as the sole candidate.

The Republican People's Party (CHP) will hold a critical convention today. The decision for an extraordinary convention was taken in anticipation of a potential ruling of absolute nullity in the convention lawsuit scheduled for September 15.

A total of 1,127 delegates will cast their votes at the 22nd Extraordinary Convention, which will begin at 10:00 AM at the Yenimahalle Municipality Nazım Hikmet Culture Center. This number was 1,368 in the convention held last year.

In order to "avoid any new controversy regarding integrity," Istanbul provincial delegates and members of the Party Assembly (PM) and the High Disciplinary Board (YDK) will not vote at the convention. Additionally, the "vote of confidence" clause in the party bylaws has been added to the agenda.

VOTE OF CONFIDENCE AND NEW ELECTIONS

The CHP has held a total of 59 conventions to date, 38 of which were ordinary. This time, over 1,300 registered delegates will hold a vote of confidence for both the Chairman and the 60-member Party Assembly and the 15-member High Disciplinary Board. Following the process of renewing confidence, the new Chairman and the members of the PM and YDK will be determined.

ÖZGÜR ÖZEL IS THE SOLE CANDIDATE

Support from at least 5 percent of the total number of delegates is required for a candidacy for the Chairmanship. The election will be held by secret ballot, and a simple majority will be the basis. If no result is reached in the first two rounds, the candidate who receives the most votes in the third round will take the seat. A signature from at least 10 delegates is required to be a candidate for the Party Assembly.

Özgür Özel will be the only name competing for the Chairmanship at this convention.

TOWARDS THE BLOCK LIST METHOD

It is expected that a block list will be implemented instead of an open list in the Party Assembly and YDK elections. The block lists will include the principal and substitute candidates determined by the Chairman.

DOORS CLOSED TO SPECTATORS

Convention preparations began days in advance. Due to the limited capacity of the hall, spectators will not be admitted this time. Special work areas have been set aside for members of the press in the foyer area.

39TH CONVENTION ON THE WAY IN NOVEMBER

Following the extraordinary convention, the CHP will turn its focus to the 39th Ordinary Convention to be held in November. At that meeting, both the new Chairman and the members of the PM and YDK will be determined again. Furthermore, the new party program, which is currently under preparation, will be submitted for the approval of the delegates.

SALICI: "I AM PROTECTING THE PARTY FROM PERSONAL AMBITIONS"

Oğuz Kaan Salıcı, a prominent figure of the intra-party opposition known for his closeness to Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, announced that he would not be a candidate and would not put forward a list. Salıcı drew attention by stating, "This decision I have taken is neither a surrender nor an acceptance. This is a will to protect our party from personal ambitions and unnecessary tensions."
