Crack in the People's Alliance! Controversial remarks from AKP provincial chair to MHP mayor

Tensions are rising within the People's Alliance, formed by the AKP and MHP.

AKP Kütahya Provincial Chair Mustafa Önsay visited the Gediz district, which the MHP won in the March 31 Local Elections. It was learned that during his speech there, Önsay harshly criticized his alliance partner, the MHP, without naming them directly.

According to a report by Başak Kaya from Sözcü newspaper, it emerged that the AKP's Önsay said, “Friends, we did not see from the CHP what we have seen from them.”

The Gediz Municipality, which the AKP won in 2019, passed to the MHP in March 2024. According to the allegations, AKP Kütahya Provincial Chair Mustafa Önsay met with village headmen (muhtars) in the Gediz district last week alongside an AKP member of parliament. Making harsh criticisms directed at both some opposition figures within his own party and the MHP, Önsay said, “This government is the Erdoğan government, and I am responsible for the government in this city,” and used the following highly controversial words:

“What happened to the debts you posted? If they ask, they say there is an alliance; there is no such alliance! It is shameful. Friends, we did not see from the CHP what we have seen from them. Can there be this much immorality, this much lack of character, this much shamelessness! Will these days never end, will there not be an election? What will you do then? Today you are penalizing AKP people. Do you think these days will never pass? What will you do if one day we behave like you? We have not oppressed anyone, we have not played with anyone's livelihood. What kind of sense of revenge do you have? They think we will stay silent. Let them all come. We will not bow down to empty talk, posturing, and showing off by coming here once a month!”
