Date set for trial of Selçuk Tengioğlu, who attacked CHP leader Özgür Özel
The trial date for Selçuk Tengioğlu, who attacked CHP Chairman Özgür Özel following the funeral of Sırrı Süreyya Önder's relative, has been set. Tengioğlu, who faces up to 4.5 years in prison, is scheduled to appear in court.

Following a ceremony held at the Atatürk Cultural Center on May 6, 2024, for Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and DEM Party MP Sırrı Süreyya Önder, Selçuk Tengioğlu, who attempted to slap CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, was taken into custody and arrested by the court the same day.
UP TO 4.5 YEARS IN PRISON SOUGHT
In the indictment prepared regarding the attack, it was requested that Tengioğlu be sentenced to between 2 years and 3 months and 4 years and 6 months in prison for the crime of "intentional injury due to public duty."
TRIAL DATE SET
According to the report by HaberTürk reporter Ceylan Sever, the Istanbul 44th Criminal Court of First Instance has set the trial date for Selçuk Tengioğlu for Tuesday, July 9, 2025, at 10:30 AM. The court also decided to appoint a mandatory defense attorney for the defendant through the bar association.
It was revealed that 66-year-old Selçuk Tengioğlu had killed his two children in 2004 and had been imprisoned for that crime. Tengioğlu, who also has a criminal record for theft and threats, was released on parole in 2020 after serving a total of 16 years in prison.

Making a statement after the attack, Özgür Özel said, “We are not afraid, but those who organized this attack should be afraid of us. We did not cut our program short, we did not go to the hospital, and we did not take a single step back from our struggle.” Özel had sent a message with the words, “If we bow even an inch, they will try to bring this nation to its knees. We will never allow this.”
