DEVA Party's Yeneroğlu criticizes failure to convene extraordinary session: 'It is a clear disrespect to the national will'

DEVA Party Istanbul MP Mustafa Yeneroğlu and DEVA Party Ankara MP İdris Şahin held a press conference at the Parliament.

Yeneroğlu pointed to the Court of Cassation 3rd Criminal Chamber's ruling regarding Can Atalay, arguing that as long as this issue remains unresolved, one cannot speak of the reputation of the Constitution, the law, or the parliament.

"KURTULMUŞ'S DECISION IS UNACCEPTABLE"

Reminding that they had called for an extraordinary session of the TBMM to discuss this matter, Yeneroğlu stated, "Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş rejected our request with meaningless and unacceptable justifications. Mr. Kurtulmuş's decision is absolutely unacceptable; he has no such authority and is obligated to fulfill his duty."

"THE PARLIAMENT LOSES ITS MEANING"

Yeneroğlu noted that the TBMM is currently in recess and can be convened for an extraordinary session according to the Rules of Procedure, stating, "Looking at the records of the TBMM, there have been calls from either the government or the opposition since 1983, and 46 extraordinary meetings have been held. However, unfortunately, it could not happen this time. At a time when we cannot go beyond the agenda set by the government under the roof of the Parliament, stripping the opposition of its right to call the Parliament to an extraordinary meeting is a clear disrespect to the national will. Ignoring this authority of the opposition and the will of 230 MPs from 8 political parties reveals an understanding of a Parliament without opposition, in which case the Parliament loses its meaning."

CAN ATALAY STATEMENT

Yeneroğlu, who wants the TBMM to convene for an extraordinary session as soon as possible, also demanded that Parliament Speaker Kurtulmuş "fulfill his duty regarding the release of Can Atalay."

DEVA Party's Şahin also argued that the Court of Cassation 3rd Criminal Chamber's decision on Can Atalay "disregarded the clear provisions of the Constitution."

Şahin claimed that the failure to call the General Assembly to an extraordinary meeting was extremely erroneous and stated that this mistake must be corrected.
