Do citizens want an early election? Here are the poll results

Area Research shared the findings of its study conducted with 2,056 people in 26 provinces between July 4-7 using the CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing) method. The margin of error was calculated as +- 2.16 percent. 

Citizens were asked the question, “If there were a parliamentary election today, which party would you vote for?”

The data obtained was compared with the vote shares political parties won in the May 14 general elections. Accordingly, the CHP took the lead with 32.1 percent of valid votes. 29 percent of those who participated in the poll answered AKP.

EARLY ELECTION DEMAND

In the poll, 53.3 percent answered yes to the question, “Do you think there should be an early general election?”

In the poll where the majority wants an early election, the rate of those who answered no was 41.2 percent. 5.5 percent did not express an opinion. 

PARLIAMENTARY SYSTEM RESPONSE

While the rate of those stating that the management system in Turkey should continue with the Presidential system brought by the 2017 referendum was 35.4 percent, the majority, at 54.5 percent, wanted a return to the parliamentary system. The rate of those who did not express an opinion was seen as 10.1 percent.

MANSUR YAVAŞ AHEAD

Another question asked was, “Who should be the opposition's candidate in the first presidential election to be held?” In the responses given, Ankara Metropolitan Municipality (ABB) Mayor Mansur Yavaş came in first with 25.3 percent. Yavaş was followed by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu with 19.6 percent. After İmamoğlu, CHP leader Özgür Özel took third place with 7.8 percent.

NO TRUST IN ŞİMŞEK 

The rate of those stating that the policies implemented by Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek, who is frequently discussed due to austerity measures, can put the country on the right track was 26.2 percent. The rate of those stating that he cannot put the country on the right track surpassed those who voted positively by a wide margin, reaching 61.1 percent. The rate of those who did not express an opinion was 12.7 percent. 

SHOULD NEGOTIATE WITH ASSAD

The rate of those stating that the government should negotiate with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to solve the Syrian refugee problem was 85.4 percent. While the rate of those stating that it should not negotiate was 8.5 percent, 6.1 percent did not express an opinion. 

SUPPORT FOR NORMALIZATION

The public was also asked questions regarding the entry into a period of normalization/softening in politics with the meeting between CHP leader Özel and President Erdoğan. Citizens who viewed this process positively made up the majority at 54 percent. While the rate of those who viewed it negatively was 35.6 percent, 10.4 percent did not express an opinion. Furthermore, the rate of those stating that the CHP should continue to meet with the AKP was 59.2 percent; the rate of those stating that it should not meet with the AKP was 27.7 percent.
