Earthquake expert Mutlu Gürler runs for Datça Municipality: 'The Datça model will be an example for Turkey'
Mutlu Gürler, founding head of the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality's Earthquake Risk Management and Urban Improvement Department and a geological engineer, has filed his candidacy for the Datça mayoral nomination from the CHP. Gürler, a geological engineer and the founding head of the ABB Earthquake Risk Management and Urban Improvement Department, has filed his candidacy for the Datça mayoral nomination from the CHP.
ABB bureaucrat Gürler emphasized the protection of Datça's natural wealth and a holistic approach to tourism, highlighting the need to bring the region's ecotourism character to the forefront.

Pointing out that solving problems such as water shortages, transportation, and infrastructure will be among his priorities, Gürler said the following:
“We will work for urban planning that befits the region's 'cittaslow' (slow city) atmosphere and its geography, which offers unique richness. We are aware of the problems awaiting us. Let no one have any doubt that we will overcome these problems together with the residents of Datça through our experience in public administration and effective cooperation with institutions. We are aware of the deficiencies in Datça's health and education infrastructure. Planning Datça as a resilient and exemplary city against all types of disasters, especially the reality of earthquakes, will be among our priorities. The Datça model for earthquakes will be an example for Turkey.”
WHO IS MUTLU GÜRLER?
Gürler, who served within the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks between 1993 and 1998, is known for his work on protecting the natural fabric of Marmaris National Park and the Datça Peninsula. Subsequently, Gürler served as Chief Advisor to the Deputy Chairman of Local Governments at the CHP Headquarters in 2010. Between 2016 and 2019, Gürler coordinated efforts initiated within the Muğla Metropolitan Municipality to integrate geothermal resources into health tourism and to contribute to regional development and employment by extending tourism throughout the 12 months of the year. Following the 2019 local elections, Gürler was appointed by Mansur Yavaş as the Head of the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality's Earthquake Risk Management and Urban Improvement Department. Gürler also served as the head of the search and rescue teams that conducted the first response in the field during the Maraş and Hatay earthquakes.
