CHP's presidential candidate and Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Ekrem İmamoğlu reacted to the Ministry of Justice's appeal against the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruling regarding Selahattin Demirtaş.
İmamoğlu stated that this appeal "casts a shadow over the hope for a democratic Turkey free from terror."
"THE EXPECTATION OF JUSTICE HAS BEEN DISREGARDED"
Expressing that the expectation of justice held by millions of citizens has been ignored in his statement, İmamoğlu said, "This step damages society's faith in law and justice. The continuation of Mr. Demirtaş's imprisonment is a major obstacle to the Kurdish issue entering a path toward resolution and to the strengthening of politics instead of weapons."
"DEMİRTAŞ'S FREEDOM IS THE MEASURE OF SINCERITY"
İmamoğlu stated that the government's sincerity regarding democratization can be measured by the release of Demirtaş, adding, "The measure of the government's sincerity is tied to Mr. Demirtaş's freedom."
"TURKEY WILL NOT BE A COUNTRY WHERE POLITICIANS ARE IN PRISON"
At the end of his statement, İmamoğlu expressed that they are in solidarity with everyone who defends democracy and continued his post as follows:
"We emphasize once again that we stand with Selahattin Demirtaş and everyone who defends democracy. We believe that our country will reach peaceful days through the will and struggle of the nation. Turkey will not be a country where politicians are in prison."
