Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu attended the "Educators' Meeting" organized by the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye (TBB) and the İBB.
The event, held at the Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall with the participation of approximately 1300 Enstitü İstanbul İSMEK educators, featured live music and folk dance performances. İmamoğlu delivered speeches at the event alongside İBB Deputy Secretary General Zeynep Neyza Akçabay.
In his speech, İmamoğlu emphasized that educators are the heroes of society fighting against ignorance, recalling the words of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk: "The enemy of society is ignorance, and the enemy of ignorance is teachers." Highlighting the importance of education, İmamoğlu stated:
''Education is a sacred duty of yours. You have a very important role in carrying society to a civilized level. In this geography where science and education have developed for centuries, it is our collective responsibility to prepare our children for the future.”
Stating that he prefers the term "educator" over the name "Educators' Meeting," İmamoğlu expressed his satisfaction with the fact that female educators were in the majority.
STATEMENT ON NARİN GÜRAN
İmamoğlu also shared his feelings regarding the murder of 8-year-old Narin Güran in Diyarbakır. Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, İmamoğlu said, “This nation must stand up and take all necessary measures to stay away from ignorance,” stating that society must take action in the face of such tragedies.
İmamoğlu added, “Justice sought after losing a child is not justice to me. Justice is protecting our children from the moment they are born. May God protect all the children of this country,” once again reminding everyone of the importance of child safety and education.
Stating that he believes educators have an important role in the fight against ignorance and that they will fulfill this duty in the best way possible, İmamoğlu concluded his speech by saying, “We are grateful for your efforts.”
