Following the heavy defeat in the March 31 Local Elections, the number of candidates has risen to 4 after IYI Party leader Meral Akşener, who took her party to a congress, announced that she would not be a candidate.
It is being discussed in the lobbies that Akşener will continue to be an influential figure in the party in the new term.
It is claimed that Akşener will support Dervişoğlu at the congress.
So far, Group Deputy Chair Müsavat Dervişoğlu, Group Chair Koray Aydın, Migration Policies Chair Tolga Akalın, and Founding Board Member Günay Kodaz have announced their candidacies.
According to the report by Merve Kılıç from Cumhuriyet, it is alleged that Akşener supports Dervişoğlu and that Dervişoğlu's candidacy text was written by Akşener's chief of staff, Esma Bekar. Furthermore, it is predicted that the congress will witness a fierce struggle between Aydın and Dervişoğlu.
Responding to journalists' questions, Dervişoğlu, regarding whether he had consulted with Akşener, said, “I only received our chair's blessing. I am witnessing attempts to create speculation out of this, and I am saddened by it.” Regarding going to the congress with many candidates, Dervişoğlu stated, “It will not lead to a division. I also believe that such a field of fierce competition will not emerge.”
