Erdoğan calls for UN Security Council reform, TKP General Secretary Okuyan raises questions about the US and NATO

AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan criticized the current structure of the Security Council and reiterated his call for reform during his speech at the 81st United Nations (UN) General Assembly.

TKP General Secretary Kemal Okuyan responded to Erdoğan's remarks regarding the dysfunction of the UN.

Erdoğan began his speech by highlighting the absence of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas from the General Assembly, noting that Abbas has been unable to attend the session for two consecutive years. "This injustice against our Palestinian brothers wounds our conscience," Erdoğan said, calling on countries that have not yet recognized the Palestinian state to reconsider their decisions.

Stating that pressure on Israel must be increased, Erdoğan addressed the international community, saying, "I invite you to exert more pressure on Israel."

One of the prominent topics in President Erdoğan's speech was the structure of the UN Security Council. Repeating his phrase "The world is bigger than five," Erdoğan argued that a system where the will of more than 190 countries is dependent on the stance of 5 countries is not fair.

What this scene, which should shake us all, tells us is this: The UN Security Organization, established 81 years ago to maintain peace and security, has become unable to perform this duty, or rather, has been rendered unable to do so.

Erdoğan also touched upon the attacks on Iran and Yemen, as well as the tension in the Gulf. Stating that the spread of conflicts would benefit no one, Erdoğan expressed that contacts with relevant actors are ongoing.

Regarding Syria, Erdoğan argued that the country has entered a new era and said that under the leadership of Ahmed Shara, Syria is "moving toward becoming a safe and peaceful country despite internal and external provocations." Erdoğan also stated that the Russia-Ukraine war should end by ensuring Ukraine's territorial integrity.

OKUYAN'S QUESTION ON THE UN AND NATO

TKP General Secretary Kemal Okuyan argued that those responsible were not clearly identified in Erdoğan's criticisms of the UN.

In a statement on his social media account, Okuyan noted that the dysfunction of the UN cannot be explained solely through Israel.

Is it only Israel that has made the UN unworkable? Who is responsible for the interference of NATO, of which we are a member, in the internal affairs of countries, its attempts at occupation, and the wars it has incited? The truth is that what kept the United Nations standing as a serious institution, despite all its weaknesses, was the existence of the USSR. After 1991, capitalism dragged the international order, as it did every aspect of life, into chaos and darkness. The problem is already clear. What matters is to point out the source of the problem and the solution!

Okuyan's statement stood out as an objection to Erdoğan's call for UN Security Council reform, arguing that the role of imperialist countries, primarily the US, and NATO must also be discussed as the source of the problem.
