Erdoğan defends outdated education model

The Cabinet Meeting, chaired by President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has concluded.

Appearing before the cameras after the meeting, Erdoğan defended the 'Turkey Century Education Model,' which has been at the center of criticism from broad segments of society.

Regarding the new curriculum draft, which is criticized for being far from scientific, Erdoğan stated, "The Turkey Century Education Model will ensure that our children are prepared for the future in a much more equipped, virtuous, successful, and conscious manner."

It is stated that the new curriculum, which has drawn reactions particularly because its naming as 'Turkey Century' is seen as AKP propaganda, contains ideological elements.

The draft, prepared during the tenure of Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin—who has stated that they have signed agreements with religious sects and communities and will continue to do so—frequently uses unscientific findings and expressions.

In addition to expressions contrary to the universality of science, the problems of 'consanguineous marriage' are reflected as a 'learning outcome' to be normalized. The removal of 'integral' calculus from mathematics courses and certain expressions opposing the theory of evolution have drawn reactions from scientific circles.

"IT SERVES THEIR OWN IDEOLOGICAL OBSESSIONS"

Most recently, Republican People's Party (CHP) Group Deputy Chairman Murat Emir protested the new curriculum draft in front of the Ministry, saying, "We have come to reject this education model, which they have imposed on Turkey under the name of the Turkey Century Education Model, which they prepared behind closed doors, and which will serve their own ideological obsessions."

"WE WILL RAISE A PIOUS GENERATION"

President and AKP Chairman Erdoğan also said in a speech he delivered at the 70th Anniversary Celebration Ceremony of the Ankara University Faculty of Divinity in 2019, "A pious generation will be raised in your hands."
