President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made significant remarks regarding efforts for a new constitution during his speech at the Justice and Development Party's Extended Provincial Chairs Meeting.
Erdoğan stated that 10 legal experts have been assigned to prepare the new constitution, expressing that this work would further strengthen Turkey's democratic structure.
Erdoğan said that the current 1982 Constitution bears the marks of the coup era and that a new, civilian constitution offers an opportunity to completely cleanse these traces. Emphasizing that the new constitution will be a document that reflects universal values and fully encompasses freedoms, Erdoğan said, "This constitution will be a step that proves the maturity of Turkish politics."
NEW CONSTITUTION EFFORTS
Erdoğan stated that 10 legal experts have been assigned to begin work on the new constitution, saying, "These legal colleagues of ours will begin their work, and hopefully, we will carry out the preparations for the new constitution." He also expressed his hope that, as the People's Alliance, they would find common ground with other political parties.
CALL TO THE OPPOSITION
Addressing the opposition in his speech, Erdoğan expressed that they expect the opposition to be open to consensus on the new constitution and reform efforts regarding municipalities. Stating, "Our only goal is to find solutions to the nation's problems," Erdoğan noted that they expect the opposition to be open to cooperation on issues such as earthquakes, the constitution, and a Turkey free of terrorism.
